Shayne Ward-No Promises

This video is very good in showing that there are very similar generic conventions used in this video as is in our music video. we came across this video recently and were actually quite suprised to see that this video has almost the same storyline as us where there is a typical narrative storyline of a typical love story between a girl and boy, scenes of the boy and girl together all happy and cheery and then there are also scenes of them both fighting and arguing. by doing this the aim was to make the audience think what is going on, are they together? or aren't they? whereas if you watch the video right to the end you will find out that the woman was infact dead and the man was having flashbacks of how it used to be, this is the same storyline that we are using for our music video this shows that these types of music videos share the same generic conventions as it is always showing a narrative of the story of a couple in love about something relevant that is happening in their life that means something this is why this music video is very similar to the music video we are going to produce as this is waht we are showing in our video.

Today in lesson our group did our shot schedule where we decided what day we were going to film, what time, where we are going to film, what actors we are using, what scenes with what part of the song. This will be useful for us as when we do go out to film we will be organised as we will know what to do exactly where and when to do it so we will be on schedule and organised.

We also wrote our email to polydor records asking for their permission to use their song in our music video.

Mad- Neyo

We have uploaded this video because in this video there is intertexuality to the music video we are going to produce for example it show two people in love going through a hard time in their relationship, they are using the effect of black and white which we are going to implement in our music video whilst we are editing. Also in this video the woman dies during the song this is quite similar to our music video as the same happens in ours but we are going to show this through flashbacks.

Storyline For Music Video

We have decided to use a narrative in our music video, the original song is a very typical contemporary love song sang by a male artist. However in our video we have decided to use a female character as the singer. The storyline in our video is going to be a typical love story between a girl and boy, we will have scenes of the boy and girl together all happy and cheery and then we will also have scenes of them both fighting and argueing. by doing this we aim to make the audience think what is going on, are they together? or aren't they?. Meanwhile the lyrics of the song will also only confuse the audience even more as the lyrics 'if i lay here, would you lay with me' insinuates her wanting him too be with her but it could also be her asking him if he'll be with her. however towards the end of our music video we will be reveiling the fact that the couple aren't together any more, and the real reason for this will also be reveiled, the reason for them being apart is because 'she' the female actress has been dead throughout the whole music video and while she is singing to him, 'her love', she is also having flashbacks on their relationship. This has been used in many music videos, one of the main music videos which inspired us to use this plot as our narrative was the song 'Mad' by Neyo. Another idea we have for our music video is to have some of the flashbacks, the happy, cheery ones in colour and having the rest in black and white, we plan to do this when editing our video.

Day 3 Of Filming.......

Today on the 21st of november we are filming some of the shots for the indoor scenes. We are shooting the main character singing in the house, we have used various rooms such as the living room, bathroom etc.

Snow Patrol-Chasing Cars (lyrics)

We'll do it all
Everything
On our own

We don't need
Anything
Or anyone

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me
And just forget the world?

I don't quite know
How to say
How I feel

Those three words
Are said too much
They're not enough

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me
And just forget the world?

Forget what we're told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden
That's bursting into life

Let's waste time
Chasing cars
Around our heads

I need your grace
To remind me
To find my own

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me
And just forget the world?

Forget what we're told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden
That's bursting into life

All that I am
All that I ever was
Is here in your perfect eyes
They're all I can see

I don't know where
Confused about how as well
Just know that these things
Will never change for us at all

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me
And just forget the world?

Day 1 Of Filming......

we've completed our story board. its been raining all morning, so were going to go out to film some shots for our music video.

we successfully completed our task and filmed lots of elementary shots that we can use for our music video. alot of these shots consisted of close up shots of puddles, leaves and cars. the lighting in these clips are great and think it'll look good if we put it inbetween various shots. the main element in our video is water, we want a watery and damp affect. e.g water dripping on the windows.
therefore all these shots of water are very significant.

Ideas for music video..

Our target was to achieve and settle on a simple song and to produce something unconventional. As a group I think we have reached our objective in agreeing on a song by Snow Patrol-Chasing Cars for our main music video.
Although this is an open love song, I think ‘chasing cars’ by ‘snow patrol’ is not the standard and predictable love song that you will come across in your contemporary music videos, it is in fact quit different to your ordinary song, and I believe we can establish a video with some originality. This song contains influential lyrics therefore our aim is to produce a video where the visuals link with the lyrics.
The intertextuality is very limited in the snow patrol video, because it has an original idea, so lacks any intertextuality at all. The original video is quit dreary and the codes and signs we capture from this are very uninteresting, so therefore our target is to re create a more attention-grabbing video.
‘’Show me a garden that’s bursting into life.’’ This line demonstrates how he only wants to see the optimistic things in life. This song is positive and to us it is about ignoring reality. Everyone wants to escape from all the bad things in life and I think the lyrics illustrate this. In the original video it is about snow patrol sharing his feelings about how this girl has helped him overcome all these bad effects. This song is to a great extent about memories, therefore the idea that we have come up with, is to portray the good memories in colour and the bad memories in black and white.
There is going to be 2 main characters throughout our video, with the female acting out the most dominant role. We are going to base our video on two couples who are madly in love but do not have consent from their families. When they’re together nothing matter, but as soon as they go home there is lots of confrontation and their parents cannot bear the thought of their offspring seeing each other. These symbolic codes will grasp the viewer’s awareness and it will make them think about the couple’s situation, and hopefully feel some emotion for them.
We want to have the female performer to have the most leading part in lip singing. It will be rather unusual to have a female, singing along to a tune sung by a male as it rarely happens. So it is quit risky. However we believe it’ll be interesting to continue with this idea as it will be exciting to watch the female side of the relationship.
The original video has one man throughout, which doesn’t do much justice to the song because the lyrics are very powerful. I think it will visually look better and exciting if the female stars as the main character, I believe it’ll captivate the audience’s attention more and make them focus on the lyrics.

Research - Music promo research

The purpose of a music video is to promote the artist and song by appealing to the audiences who view it, using conventions that suit the genre of the act shown. This can be shown by using techniques such as camera angles, mise-en-scene and lighting which can manipulate the way a viewer sees the production. As examples I will use different genres to prove that different types of music need a different approach to the making of the music video as part of my research on my own music video.

Michael Jackson - Scream

The Michael Jackson video featuring his sister Janet Jackson In 'Scream' is the most expensive music video ever produced costing up to a whopping $7 million. The production was released in May 1995 and directed by Mark Romanek who has now directed many popular song videos including Madonna and Jay-Z. The timing of the video acted as a response to the critics after Michael Jackson's backlash in 1993, meaning Jackson had to regain his fans with a massive record and a video that matched the situation. The video highlighted sexuality in a very exceptional way by using different aspects of mise-en-scene which creates the audiences' feelings with visual effects.
The theme of the video is a futuristic space ship travelling through space with the two characters on board far away from Earth, with possible inspiration from Star Trek or Star Wars. Clips are then shown of them dancing, almost competing against each other with great enthusiasm and a wide variety of different shots with fast camera cuts. The amount of money spent on the video is very evident to the audience.

Firstly, the make up used in the video is very similar between both artists, which emphasises the way that the production is trying to make the genders appear as equal. However, Janet has very darkened eyes which gives her a more tougher look to the audience. The makers of the video may have tried to make this with idea that the female character has a darker side to her giving her more personality. This also stops any stereotypes which usually try to represent women as innocent and sweet. Also making her hair messier gives her a wilder look that could be more vulnerable to a man, especially in this case where she is seen to be competing against Michael Jackson. Michael also has these features in a less extreme way so he looks a bit calmer than Janet with less eye make-up and straighter hair.

The costumes of the characters also match each other which in an interesting way shows hardly any difference between the sexualities. The costume used seems too masculine for a typical woman and too feminine for a typical man which shows that the style of the video aims at audiences of both audiences. Again it emphasises the point that men and women are shown as equal. There are certain clips in the video where Janet Jackson is more revealing than others. The shots which focus on her bikini top underneath her coat gives the video a sexual element and certainly her own attractiveness. During this scene she is wearing white instead of black which shows a change of rhythm of the video.

The different props shown in the video highlights the theme of the video being futuristic and also the props matches the colours and surroundings in the scenes. Although there is one important prop that is used throughout the video which portrays the artist's sexuality, the chair. It is the same scene which is shown with the two characters switching and they both reveal sexual actions to make them more appealing to the audience. The shot of Michael Jackson shown in front of the planet Earth almost looks like he is standing on top of the world which gives us the impression that he is overshadowing his sister vocally in the video. This is probably what the video makers were trying to achieve because he is the more successful artist and the video was made for the response of his own personal disaster.

The percentage of camera shots are zoomed in on Michael Jackson which also highlights the point the video is about him. We gain the feeling that Michael is competing against his sister but is overshadowing in ability which in a way is in favour of the male dominance in the video.
