Editing

Video editing is both an Artistic and Technical process in which a collection of video material (footage) is compiled and altered from its original form to create a new version.
The artistic process of video editing consists of deciding what elements to retain, delete, or combine from various sources so that they come together in an organized, logical, and visually pleasing manner.
Video shots are structured in such a way that they are shot in order and of correct length. This process does not require any additional equipment other than the Camcorder itself, but requires good shooting and organizational skills at the time of the shoot.

Today I and my group did a substantial amount of editing after school. We managed to edit some footage. We have yet more to amend, but at the same time we have productively captivated footage of just over two minutes long. Giving us just over two more minutes’ worth of editing left to do. The process is very tiring and time consuming, so we’re always feeling reluctant to do editing after school hours; however we are getting there with the motivation we’re receiving from the teachers.
Although our Christmas holidays have started for us, we’re all going to make the effort in coming in 9.00 in the morning tomorrow to expectantly complete our music video if not most of it.
some of the footage we filmed consists of beautiful nature scenery.

Codes and Conventions of music Videos.

We looked at the various style of pop videos (as our music video falls under the category of pop) and the 3 main forms that they come in; Performance, Narrative and Image.
Performance speaks for itself; these videos in general consist of performances, usually based on a stage or something of a similar sort. Narrative (which we have used) is where the video tells the spectators a story either the one associating to the song or a distinct narrative is told. Image is when the video emphasises on the artist/s as the central concept.

There is a individual style of video for every type or genre of music. Some conventions even spread over into different genres. I looked at different genres of videos and the codes and conventions that go with them.

For example the conventions on average that go with Hip/Hop & Rap videos are; Sex, Money, Cars, Girls, Big Houses, Clubs, Bling and Alcohol, and are usually narrative or performance based videos. R 'n' B videos are quite glamorised, include a lot of voyeurism and bling and are mostly image-narrative based. Boy band videos are performance based and are continually flooded with clips of concerts, screaming girl fans and dance routines. Indie Band videos are on the whole on live stages and are fairly performance based. Heavy Metal videos are surrounded by mosh pits, dark clothing and blaring rockers and are all performance based.

My group watched the video for Nelly ‘Hot in here’. The video was hip-hop/ r 'n' b and was very stereotypical of the genre with the videos being flooded with girls, dancing, cars, bling & clubs and was very performance based, the reason why it is performance based is because there were girls dancing on tables and 'grinding' with men, and on tabletops as well, the girls are also very inadequately dressed. The video has a verse/chorus structure to it and uses a lot of common motifs such as tattoos on the rappers etc.

Lyric interpretation...

We'll do it all
Everything
On our own
We don't need
Anything
Or anyone

I know how this feels. You're so in love with someone, you don't care what anyone else tells you to do, even if the person is all wrong for you. If you love them, you do what you want.

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

You just want to ignore everything else, to have that perfect moment, to forget all the bad things that may be going on around you.

I don't quite know
How to say
How I feel
Those three words
Are said too much
They're not enough

When you're in love, I love you can't fully express how you feel. It's said too often, too casually, to give the full meaning that you have inside.

Let's waste time
Chasing cars
Around our heads

This bit, I think may be just about wasting time in meaningless ways, just so you can be with that person a little bit longer.

I need your grace
To remind me
To find my own

You find a peace, a goodness, a happiness in that person, you want to be able to find it inside yourself, so that they feel the same way with you.

All that I am
All that I ever was
Is here in your perfect eyes, they're all I can see

Could be metaphoric for you seeing yourself reflected in their eyes and you feel like you are a better because of them. Like you are even a part of them, and they are of you.

I don't know where
Confused about how as well
Just know that these things will never change for us at all

You may not remember where or how you met them, but you know you love them and you know that you wan to always love them. And you don't know what is going to happen later, but you don't want to stop being in love with them.

Love has been categorized and simplified by our daily lives living in a world that if full of strife and cynicism. This song expresses how powerful and simple love really is. If you are in love, you don't need anyone or anything except the person that you share the purity with. It is like a bright light, drowning out everything around us. It is so beautiful we are drawn to it but sometimes afraid to let the light shine on us. Everyone of us interprets love differently only knowing what we are taught and many times we will go our entire lives never experiencing it because we never really take the time to feel it. We never know when we will meet our soul mate or what we will have going on in our lives at the time, but to take the chance and make changes takes a great amount of trust and emotion. A garden of new life blooms, each flower delicate and precious we need to appreciate each one for what it is. To express to someone that you love them opens us up our inner self. How do you put into words how you feel about that other person. Sometimes it is suiting to lay there and share the moment, leaving everything that we know behind us. Being in the presence of our true love confirms our desire and need to live our life to its fullest. No matter how much we think of ourselves, this person can bring us right back to the reality of what we are. Chasing cars simplifies the complications of life, we all have things that we strive for maybe to never get them, but to share in the chase together unites two minds as one sharing the same goal. To live is to learn, to love is to live.

Day 4 of filming

Today i did some more filming of shots of scenery, which we're going to use to put in between cuts.
the shots consisted of lots of cars, as the title is called 'chasing cars' we think its quite fundamental that we are able to relate to the title. the shots we're mostly of cars driving straight, cars turning into the next street and some shots with cars waiting in traffic. we are hoping to use editing to fast forward the cars driving, so we have a speedy effect. in addition to this, i did some shots of pleasant scenery, this consisted of popular sighting's such as 'the tower of london', 'st pauls cathedral' etc. because all the filming is based in London, i think it is substantial that we ensure there is various shots that display's the different yet meaningful aspects of the city.
We still have a lot of eminent scenes which we need to shoot. shots that have the most significance in demonstrating the whole theme. this is going to take place tomorrow, in a restaurant. after we have completed our goal we can crack on with the editing and hopefully create a music video which is unique!!!

Day 3 of filming

Its been raining all afternoon today. we wanted to finish off all the main indoor scenes between the couples. we have successfully completed all the shots that were required for this particular scene. these shots contain some of the main elementary scenes which emphasizes the narrative for the this music video. the scenes were acted out by Masuma Begum, who is a member of this group and Zakwan. the whole shooting was filmed in a studio apartment. we were able to capture various shots including high angle shots, point of view shots, dolly zooms and many more . also the lighting was perfect for our setting. so by the end of the day we were really happy with how the filming went.

after our group completed the main filming. we went away and i did some filming of scenery, that can be used between cuts. i thought it'll be best if i capture some footage whilst it was raining in the dark. i went to a river side and the setting looked absolutely beautiful. the effect of the lighting reflecting onto the river was really nice; as raining being one of our principle element of our music video i thought it'll come in use for when we are finally editing.

i think today went really well for our group as we achieved great results in terms of filming, we have ticked all the boxes all that is left to do is a few more shots in a restaurant!!
